EXECUTIVE COACHING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

As an Executive Coach, Paul combines his know-how and expertise in neuropsychology with his extensive management experience to guide those with the responsibility of leadership to develop and improve their skills and competencies. He works with front-line supervisors, middle and senior managers, executives, general managers, and CEOs. Paul is skilled and practised in working with Boards, senior executives, employees and unions, family businesses and partnerships, and in situations involving turmoil and conflict.

He has worked across a diverse range of businesses and industry sectors and has consulted to large corporations in Australia and overseas for the last 45 years. Paul has worked with international organisations and governments in South-East Asia, Europe & USA. 

EXPERIENCE

Paul has extensive management and leadership experience in industrial, commercial, professional services, manufacturing, and marketing organisations. Briefly, his business experience and capability is as follows.

1969 to 1984 – as a line manager in industrial and marketing organisations, including:

  • Laboratory Supervisor,
    CSR Central Laboratory, Pyrmont, Sydney (2 labs, 18 staff)
  • Shift Supervisor,
    South Pacific Sugar Mills, Fiji (Raki Raki, Ba & Lautoka Mills)
  • Factory Manager,
    Bradford Insulation, Sydney (2 plants, 650 staff)
  • Production Manager,
    Hunter Douglas, Sydney (3 plants, 1250 staff)
  • General Manager & Director,
    Toltoys (with responsibility for domestic operations in Aust. & NZ, and export sales)
  • General Manager & Director,
    Metchem (a Consolidated Press company, with businesses in Aust. and NZ).

1985 to 2002 – as a management and strategy consultant:

  • Worldwide Partner of the Hay Group and Managing Director, Strategic Management Associates (Australia & NZ), and Managing Director, Hay Software (both Hay Group companies). Additionally, the only Australian member of two world-wide Practice Committees – Strategic Management, and Human Resource Management & Development.
  •  Partner and Chief Executive,
    Gibson Marlow, and Gibson Consulting Partners.
  • Executive Director,
    The Australian Centre for Leadership Research & Development (ACLRAD), founded in 1989.

2003 to current – as an executive coach, expert facilitator, conflict resolver and internationally qualified and practising mediator – IMI Certified Mediator, and Australia’s only EU Accredited Cross-border Mediator (registered in Belgium to practise in the EU):

  • Principal, P R Gibson;
    and
  • Executive Director
    The Centre for Conflict Management, founded in 2010.

Between 1975 and 1996 Paul had a parallel career of 21 years of service as an Officer in the Royal Australian Engineers, Australian Army Reserve. Of particular relevance over this period is his service as a Senior Instructor in Leadership & Management at the Army Reserve’s Command and Staff College, and the Command positions of Officer Commanding the Company of Officer Cadets, 2 Training Group, and Officer Commanding 5 Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers.

Paul has trained and coached thousands of middle, senior and executive managers in organisations including Qantas, Shell Australia, South32, 3M, Energy Australia, News Corp, Delta Energy, PaperlinX, PMP, UGL, Box Hill TAFE, KCI Medical, Commonwealth departments of Defence, Primary Industry, Health & Administrative Services, and others.

As a coach, Paul also draws on his experience as one of Australia’s leading consultants in strategic management and organisational change.

His results in transforming organisations are exceptional and include setting up new business models for retail & product distribution, commercialising semi-Government enterprises and re-orienting not-for-profit organisations.

His achievements include expertise, advice and support to establish: the Powerhouse Museum (Sydney), Aerospace Technologies of Australia, and Shell Australia’s multi-site retail & distributor networks; the localisation of LIHIR gold mine (PNG); commercialising Box Hill TAFE (Vic); strategic advice & specialist support to World Bank sponsored ‘5-year Development Plans’ in Malaysia & Indonesia; and developing a ‘Southern Hemisphere Strategic Plan’ for British Aerospace plc.

He has also developed and conducted bi-lingual leadership and management development programs in Vietnam & Indonesia.

Additionally,
Paul also coached an Australian representative J24 sailing team at the J24 World Titles, at Newport RI (USA) in 2000.
